I created Ham Companion Pro to be the kind of amateur-radio companion I believe every operator deserves: useful, encouraging, and patient.
Every ham deserves an Elmer
In amateur radio, an Elmer is the experienced operator who helps someone learn without making them feel rushed or judged. That idea guided Ham Companion Pro from the beginning. Whether you are learning Morse code, preparing to operate, or reaching for a practical tool, the app is designed to help you keep moving forward.
It is also why Ham Companion Pro is a one-time purchase, with no advertising, subscriptions, in-app purchases, or upsells. The whole toolkit is the product.
A lifetime of service and technology
I am a retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander, a disabled U.S. veteran, and a licensed amateur-radio operator. After my Coast Guard career, I also served as an IT Director at the University of California, Irvine, before retiring from the university.
Those years taught me the value of careful preparation, dependable tools, clear information, and helping people solve real problems. Ham Companion Pro brings those lessons together with my love of amateur radio.
My first app—at 79
When this project began, I had never written an app in Swift. With an AI coding assistant as my learning and development partner, I worked through each screen, feature, test, setback, and small victory. Four months later, Ham Companion Pro became my first published app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Building it reminded me that curiosity does not have a retirement age. You can still learn something entirely new, create something useful, and surprise yourself along the way.
Home and family
I live in Southern California with Katie, my beautiful Polynesian wife of 53 years. We share a blended family of six children—three sons and three daughters—more than a dozen grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren.
Ham Companion Pro was built at the intersection of family, service, technology, and amateur radio. I hope it becomes a trusted companion in your shack, in the field, and wherever radio takes you.

Thank you for visiting—and for giving an independent app from one ham to another a place in your station.
